Is It Illegal to Drive With Your Dog in New Jersey?
With summer on the horizon, more and more drivers will be looking to drive around with the windows down and their furry friend hanging its head out the window. Whether you're taking the dog to the beach or for a casual Sunday drive, riding with a dog in the car can present some safety difficulties. As much as you may want to bring Fido along, you should take some precautions and know exactly where the dog should sit in the car to keep the dog and yourself as safe as possible.
In fact, it's not only a safety issue. New Jersey, the state we are located in, actually has a law regarding the transport of animals. Simply put, your pet should be restrained both for your safety and its safety. This could mean using a harness designed specifically for pets or bringing a portable crate for it to sit in. Of course, that means no hanging out the windows or climbing up on your lap.

So, where is the safest place in the vehicle for your dog to sit? Well, if you do decide to use a dog harness, it's always best to get your dog set up in the back seat. Make sure the harness is secure and your dog is comfortable. You may want to have your pet up front with you, but we all know how much of a distraction that can be.
If you don't have a harness and will have your dog hanging out in a crate, the best place is really in the rear cargo area, which makes this a good option for those with larger vehicles like a crossover or SUV. If none of the above options are possible, at the very least have your dog use a human seatbelt or purchase a barrier that will keep them from climbing into the area where you are sitting.

Tips for Traveling Safely With Pets
Of course, being safely secured in the vehicle isn't the only thing to consider when traveling with your pets. There are other things to keep in mind, especially on long drives. Here are a few tips:
- Always have water on-hand. Even if it isn't available to the dog throughout the entire trip, you should make frequent stops to offer your dog some water and food.
- Don't forget the leash. If you ever need to stop the car to let your dog do its business, you'll want to do so in a safe area and with a leash to ensure they don't run off into any high traffic areas.
- Bring your dog's favorite toys. Just as you get bored in the car on a long drive, your dog does too. Your dog may decide to sleep most of the trip, but give it some options by bringing along some chew toys and maybe even some dog treats.
